I managed to solve the problem. I did some research and a post at Url aliases and arguments/ Panels put me on the right track.

The Drupal path module does not match sub-paths but only full URLs, so I downloaded and enabled the Sub-pathauto module and then the panels were being activated correctly. Now I can have different variants activated by different arguments at the end of the URL (ie alternative displays for the same organic group node). I needed this module as I was using aliases. So there was nothing wrong with the panel set up it was just the sub-path was not being added for Drupal.

Excellent! I'm glad you got it figured out because I had no idea ;-)

Brian,
Have you tried this tutorial on the newest version of panels and OG? I am having problems getting the OG nodes to pull in. I suspect the problem is with the relationship but i'm not positive. When i view my group layout page i get the body of the group and nothing else. If i put in something unrelated to the group, such as a menu, it will display, but the rest of the information that would be dependent on the group, isn't working. I noticed that the relationship option has a few more choices now then when you recorded the video. Just was curious if you have had any success with using OG 7.x-1.3 and Panels 7.x-3.2. Thanks!

Brian's picture

I'm running OG 7.x-1.3 and Panels 7.x-3.0. 3.2 was just released before Drupalcon, so I haven't had a chance to update yet. It should work though, my first thought is to make sure you are adding content from the "view panes" tab, not the "views" tab. Let me know of that's not the problem.

Brian,
Thanks for the reply. I am using view panes. I have been through your tutorial several times and i'm almost positive everything is the same. I have been looking at this issue http://drupal.org/node/1362452 which is linked to another issue that is similar. It seems as tho the relationship isn't working. I keep trying but with no luck. Any other suggestions or anything i can get you to help debug?

Brian,
Ctools appears to be the problem. The RC2 release was put out a few days ago. On my sandbox i just grabbed all the newest modules to test with. After much tinkering and frustration and experimentation, I have gotten it to work but I had to go back to the 7.x-1.0-RC1 version of Ctools. I am guessing that you probably haven't updated your version of Ctools to RC2 yet. If you can get it working on RC2, please let me know. Thanks for the reply and for the tutorials!

I am also using RC2 and can't get nodes to pull in (I am using view panes). I modified the view pane argument a bit to display title and "There is no content in this group." rather than hide view just to ensure something is happening. On the OG group page I also get this error:
Warning: Illegal offset type in isset or empty in ctools_context_required->select() (line 179 of /home/content/97/6933697/html/bam/sites/all/modules/ctools/includes/context.inc).

I am not sure if this means I need to add a context in the variant. I didn't see anything regarding that in your tutorial and I played around with it a bit but couldn't make it work.

I do get the subscribe link on sidebar and as per above the "There is no content in this group." message. I also triple checked to ensure my content group content is associated to this specific group and all other viewing permissions are ok.

I was able to get this to work by updating my OG Content views pane argument input. See my comments here for description on what I did:

The most recent dev release fixes the problem. I had the same issue and it is now resolved.

Hi,

I am trying to setup group and display group content in group. But I am unable to do so. I tried to use different versions. Can you please tell the exact versions of all the modules involved so that I can setup group as per your tutorial?

Hi, i´v done your tutorial step-by-step in local enviorment but two things are not functioning.

as first: the Articles are not showing in the groups, group body, content create links etc. are visible. Only the content of nodes arn´t.
The articles are regulary visible in dashboard etc. except in the groups they are restricted.
i hope you have an idea

Brian's picture

People have reported that the current "recommended" release of Ctools is causing issues. Try using the dev release and see if that helps.

I am having a similar problem, and have tried the dev version of CTools, no luck. I'm going to try it on a clean install and see if there is another module in conflict.

I also tried changing the settings (http://drupal.org/node/1494708#comment-5791068) as suggested by djween, but that did not work either.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for taking the trouble to put together these tutorials - amazing job

Any idea why am I missing "group form node" under "Relationships"?

Your help will be much appreciated
Steven

Brian's picture

Did you check both "Selection rules" and "Context"? And then the relationship "OG: Node is an OG group"?

Hi Brian,
Yes I checked them both
Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow
I might be missing something as, after I entered the criteria "Og: Node is an OG group" , in the next screen where I have to chose context and relationship, under "relationship" there is only "Node from node: group audience " and "node from node: other groups"

Thanks
Steven

I'm having the same exactly problem. Your videos are most helpful Brian! If only things didn't change so dramatically in Drupal from version to version. At this point I'm going to try starting over and enabling the panels module as early as possible, hopefully BEFORE I touch the groups module. Maybe that will fix it. Stay tuned. :)

CopperBot's picture

The "Group from Node" option is still missing for me under relationships and because I do not fully understand panels yet I'm unsure how to proceed with this tutorial. I'm running a newer dev version of organic groups because the current release doesn't support the sqlsrv module (needed for my project because I have to use microsoft sql server as my database)

Is this a missing token? I'd create a bug report if I was sure it was a bug. I'm a bit over my head here.

they totally changed the relations. but I still need help figuring it out.
I'll try keeping you posted.

Brian,
Thanks for this presentation
Everything works as expected HOWEVER when I click on my group articles theyr are being showed only in the "node - field:body"

I was hoping I can create a separate variant to display my articles ...or, at least, have them showing on a separate page as I cannot see the comments ...nor the images

Thanks
Steven

Brian's picture

For the images, at least, check your OG global permissions. If you're using field permissions, make sure you have the permission "view field_image" (or whatever your field is) enabled.
The comments etc. will either be a setting in Panels, or more likely, in the view that is displaying your articles.

I am using OG 7.x.1.4 panel 7.x.3.x. i followed all the steps you told. but i am not able to get OG node and view pane node when i click configure button and add content. please help me with this.

Hi Brain. i figured this out. i first enabled panels module before installing og module and it worked. thats a lot for this video. you saved my job:)

Well, I uninstalled, removed, installed Panels and after that OG, but nothing changed about this problem: the OG node and view page node are not present when I try to add content to the page variant. If anyone knows why, please tell. Thanks

Hi! Loved your videos. I followed all the steps (twice), and still cannot "see" any content I posted in my organic group. It says "There is no content in this group" when I go to the group's page. Don't suppose you might know a possible cause/fix? Thank you sir.

Hi, great tutorial but I am stuck here:
Choose "Add content"
Node - Field: Body (body)
When I get here there is no entry for Field: Body (body)
How do I get around this?

Hi! Sorry, in list of relationship, when I choose Relationships, I can not choose "Group from node", because it does not.

Sorry for my bad english.

Hello thank you for this well explained tutorial. I went through it and was able to create everything described but the "Content create links" panel was missing.

For those encountering the same problem, you need to activate the "Entity reference prepopulate module" in order to make it appear.

Hi Brian,

I too want to thanks you for this Magnificent resource.

I'm working with the new OG 7.2 and it seems that when creating a variant, the relationship "Group from node" does not exist.

any ideas how to build it.

thanks,
Tomer

a few comments above.

I can confirm, that I do not see "Group from node" selection - tryed all the tricks with no luck

OG 7.2 dev

Brian's picture

Ok, I guess I'll go ahead and put a disclaimer at the top that this tutorial is for the 7.x-1.x version only.

It seems that 7.2 is in a stable beta version, so you can go ahead and try putting something together.
I don't think that it's all that different, maybe even making just one video that helps people unravel the new relations in the OG model could do.
If that's not an option now, I'd be happy if you could add a link to an expiation somewhere else.
(thanks again for this great resource),
t.

Hiya, your videos are really great and easy to follow for us all to set up our sites. Just wondering about updating us on "Part 3: Organic Groups Layout". The module has since been updated from the version you used which means many of us are left with how to move on from here. Your disclaimer was posted 9 months ago. Who can we turn to, if not you, to help us out?

Anyone managed to get this working in a D7.22 install, Panels 7.x-3.3 and OG 7.x-2.2?

First, thanks so much for explaining this module...

But, instead of my article titles coming through in the group list as H1 titles like they are on the individual articles, they are coming through as H2 links.

I want them to be standard titles for styling reasons, with read-more links below (as yours do in the video)

I've looked all over in the Page settings and the View settings and can't find a way of changing this... please help!

I managed to solve this problem for my own needs... not sure if it's the correct way. Changed in the OG View > Format - changed from 'Content' to 'Fields' then added Title and Body fields which are 'style-able'.

thanks again for the nice work explaining OG, as the documentation on the project page is a bit of a slog.

Organic groups - OG Content create links, i added this to the panel, but it is not shown on the page. What i have to check to fix this?
P.S.: during the versions updates (and back to OG 7x.1x branch) some contexts were broken and i renewed them manually.

For those who may need it:

1. Install and enable http://drupal.org/project/entityreference_prepopulate

2. On each of your group content types, edit the group reference fields to enable prepoplute

Now your Content Create Links should appear correctly in your panel.

Content create links will appear, but context will be still missing.

Hi there,

Thanks

Your material up to this point has been a great help but for D7 users there seem to have been some changes, and i don't know whether it's you, Drupal or my hosting package that's giving me grief.

In your section Override the Node template for Groups

  • At the bottom of ech page it invites us to 'save', but doing so sends us back to the beginning of the process with nothing saved.
  • The relationship option "Group from node" no longer seems to exist

Having not been ale to progress further I have to leave it there.

Can you help?

Brian's picture

As I stated at the top of this page. These videos are only aplicable to OG 7.x-1.x. I haven't yet had a need to look into 2.x, but I'm told there are quite a few differences. Unfortunately, because I haven't looked into it, I'm not sure what to tell you. :(

Hi, I'm kind new to drupal, also I'm following this great video series! Right now I have a problem, when creating a layout for groups (video 3 - OG layouts), under Relationships steps, I can't see the "OG group from node" option. I followed the videos 1 and 2 without variations. The only difference is that my drupal instalation is in portuguese. any idea?

Brian's picture

Hi Dany,
I suspect you're using OG 7.x-2.x. The note at the top of the page states that this series only applies to OG 7.x-1.x

Thanks, you are right!. now it works great with og-7.x-1.5

Brian, I just wanted to thank you for this great tutorials; your tutorials helped me to edit some organic groups in an existing Drupal website for one of the companies I work for. You showed me the way and really saved me. THANKS A LOT!
っ^◡^)っ

First of all, thank you very much for the great videos you've put together. They are really useful.

In your note you say that you'll be waiting for a stable version of OG 2.x before updating the videos. As of today the version on Drupal.org is 7.x-2.2. Would you consider it stable enough to update the videos?

There are indeed enough differences to make our head hurt, i.e. the view og-list (ti list all group) is missing. So it would be very useful to get an updated version.

In any case, thank you again for providing this great service to the drupal community.

Cheers
